I must say that this travel guide was incredibly helpful for my first trip to Argentina. The guide includes a map, helpful hints to plan your trip( which helped me maximize funds), great cultural background, and a survival guide to Argentina. Also, the 'do not miss' sections were incredibly valuable. I found other travelers who stayed for a longer period of time than I did, hadn't experienced nearly half of the do not miss sections I visited after reading this guide. Unfortunately, I was disappointed navigating through contents using the kindle edition, so within an hour of struggling with the kindle links, I had to order the paperback version. With that said, this is an incredible guide. I was lucky to travel with my husband, so we were able to read information at the same time. He just had to struggle with the kindle while I read the paperback. Hehe. I have been buying lonely planet guides in paperback since then. I highly recommend the following LP guides:Ireland, Boston, Galapagos, Montreal, and Alaska.
Great overview with the right amount of details for areas to visit and what to see in those areas. We primarily used it for Bueno Aires and Iguazu Falls area. It was good for both. T I I loved the language quickies in the back of the book really helpful when I was in a pinch as very few engllsh speakers in Argentina.he only problem is that the prices for eating were incorrect. Inflation has grown since the book was published. The only problem is that the prices for eating were incorrect. Inflation has grown since the book was published. If something was 80-100 pesos it has gone up to 110-140 ; the book mentions that the prices could be different due to inflation just beware. . This review is for the physical version not the electronic one
Lonely Planet is my go to for travel guide books, and while I accept that no guide can be perfect, I felt that this Argentina one did not live up to LP's normally high standards. The coverage of Buenos Aires, a main destination in Argentina, I found to be particularly lacking. Restaurant recommendations were solid, but nightlife was very off. Other LP books include great walking tours of major cities - nothing like that was included in this book.I also traveled to Bariloche during my time in Argentina. Here the guide book was very misleading. I was expecting the coverage of this area to be less, considering this is not a huge tourist destination like Patagonia, but the reviews of certain towns in the region really put me off course. Bariloche, for example, was not described as a tourist hub with hotels and cabanas lining the main street for miles. Had I known this, I wouldn't have booked a place weeks ahead outside of town. Villa Traful is described as small and quaint, but nowhere does it mention that there is only one restaurant in town open for dinner - we were expecting the restaurant that LP recommended to be open, but it was more of a snack/tea rather than a full meal place.I can't speak for coverage on the other areas, but for Buenos Aires and Bariloche, I would recommend looking somewhere else.
I love Lonely Planet books. I've traveled to dozens of countries carrying the appropriate LP book..I also love the Kindle format and i've purchased and read hundreds of Kindle books. Finally I love my iPad and how well the Kindle format works on it. So when I planned a trip to Argentina, the obvious thing to do was to buy the Kindle version of LP Argentina and run it on my iPad. Wrong. This is a monstrosity. Nothing works. You can't find anything on a timely basis. It's just a big goo of information that you can't get at. The LP people must be desperate for money if they're willing to destroy their fine reputation with dreck like this. If you buy this I can guarantee many hours of frustrations as you try to perform the simplest tasks. A guide to Detroit written by Paris Hilton would be easier to follow than this pile of garbage. I hate being taken advantage of-especially my companies I trust. So I'm done with any LP book and will be trying rough Guide and Barefoot.
So... you probably purchase Lonely Planets because in the past these travel books provide information about off-the-beaten-path trips and things to do. This book absolutely does not deliver what I expect from Lonely Planet. You can only find very basic information about towns in Argentina, tour operators, restaurants, and accommodation. NOTHING ELSE. Not even basic information about various treks - you need to purchase the LP Trekking in Patagonian Andes to find that. For my purposes (backpacking in Patagonia, traveling between Argentina and Chile), I would have been better served by purchasing the LP South America on a Shoestring (has nearly the same information as LP Argentina, with info on other countries) and LP Trekking in Patagonian Andes books.
I sat down and looked at 4 other options for Books on visiting Argentina. This one is great for those planning to road trip and visit other smaller cities. You can investigate all the smaller cities and look at other places to eat/sleep and visit. Pictures and recommended excursions are also indicated here. If you are traveling on tours or on a highend budget, then this book may not suit you. DK Eyewitness book may be better for those on tours, but both have great pictures and highlights. A map in the back on Buenos Aires is included.. almost a freebie! I would recommend this to anyone 18-50, who plans on freelance, unguided travel through Argentina. I cannot complain much about this book, other than the pages are really thin so be gentle with those book.
This guidebook worked great on our recent travels to Argentina! Solid advice for food, lodging, and adventures along the way. Highly recommend spending time in the lakes district around Bariloche and El Bolson.
Great book. Must read for anyone looking to travel to Argentina. I bought this prior to a backpacking trip I never went on bc I bought a sports car instead.
