About the Author

Professor Richard Stanley is one of the most well-known algebraic combinatorists in the world. He is currently professor of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Amongst his several visiting professorships, Stanley has received numerous awards including the George Polya Prize in Applied Combinatorics, Guggenheim Fellowship, admission to both the American Academy and National Academies of Sciences, Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition, Rolf Schock Prize in Mathematics, Senior Scholar at Clay Mathematics Institute, Aisenstadt Chair, Honorary Doctor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, and an honorary professorship at the Nankai University. Professor Stanley has had over 50 doctoral students and is well known for his excellent teaching skills. Stanley’s list of publications amount to over 155.

Deepstep teems with wry, rich sentences no one else could have written: "I left my chicory-blue swimsuit back at the motel where the baseball team cannonballed us out of the pool." Who are the Veals of Deepstep? The reader of Wright's ninth book of poetry (e.g., Tremble, Ecco, 1996) many never really know, but they are one of the bright verbal flashes in this word map of the American South. This book-length poem, punctuated by snippets of song lyrics, literary puns, and local color, moves by association of sound and image through parts of Georgia and South Carolina, focusing on towns that are probably too small for most maps: "West of Rome is Poetry. Poetry, Georgia. Wonder who lives/ there." While Wright drops tantalizing hints of her Arkansas upbringing, there is not much to relate it to the poem's cultural place-markers: the spot where Michael Jordan's father was murdered, an unidentified college that gives her the creeps. Wright is intelligent and witty and seems to be moving in a poetic direction she believes in, but for some readers special effects may not be an adequate substitute for linear plot and effect. Dear Colleague,

 

Now in a new Second Edition, How to Think Logically is a concise and user-friendly textbook for freshman-level logic and critical thinking courses. Focused throughout on arguments and how we may evaluate them, the book is intended to show students how to distinguish between arguments that ought to persuade us and those that should not. It presents students with criteria for assessing both deductive and inductive reasoning, and it does so in a clear writing style much praised by our students. "This book is well written and structured," students have told us again and again over the ten semesters since it first appeared. "It’s easy to understand."

 

We believe that critical thinking skills are more vital than ever as a component of a liberal education. In a world where college graduates face increasingly fierce competition for jobs, those who are careful reasoners, lucid writers, and clear-headed thinkers are simply better equipped to succeed in any area of specialization. Learning these skills, however, should not be a dry, dull process, but an exercise leavened with humor and down-to-earth examples that students can understand.

 

How to Think Logically accomplishes these goals with materials designed specifically for readers who have never encountered philosophy before, and for whom analytical thinking may at first be an unfamiliar exercise. In our courses at the City University of New York, at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, and at the University of Texas Pan American, we have used this book with students from a great number of different nationalities, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. Invariably, we find that students respond well to its simple format, lively examples, and plain language.

 

In addition, this textbook comprises only enough material for a standard fifteen-week course (with flexibility to allow instructors options for different approaches); thus students are not paying for material they don’t use. This helps us keep costs down, a welcome feature at a time when students are struggling with soaring tuition and fees!

 

But at no point does How to Think Logically compromise on logical rigor. The book charts a mainstream course through discussions of natural language, meaning, truth, belief, and definition. It discusses twenty of the most common informal fallacies, explaining what is wrong with each type and how to avoid it. It also includes an expanded treatment of deductive reasoning, both in modern, propositional logic (including the rudiments of symbolic notation and natural deduction) and traditional, syllogistic logic. We believe that this is the book instructors have been looking for. It presents a broad and immensely readable approach to introductory-level logic, yet it does so concisely and at moderate cost.

Ancient scripts were called Brahmi, Kharoshthi attesting the divine dispensation of Vagdevi and speech forms from the lips of artisans (khar ‘smith’ oshti ‘lip’) This discovery of the language of a civilization provides a foundation for further civilization studies including a re-assessment of general semantics, the formation and evolution of all Bharatiya language forms and cultural contacts with neighbouring cultural regions of Eurasia for nearly 8 millennia. The word Samskriti relatable to Samskrtam is the weltanschauung defining both the material resources and adhyatmika foundations for the mores of people of a vibrant region of the globe with a civilizational foundation which dates back to over 8 millennia. Bharata’s Natya Sastra (c. 200 BCE), a treatise on performing arts, theatre, dance and music provides a documentation of provincial or des’I or vernacular forms of speech which may be variant pronunciation of sememes (root words of dhAtupATha). This work in 6000 karikas or verse stanzas incorporates 36 chapters three of which relate to messaging systems: Rules of Prosody and Rules on the use of languages, Modes of address and intonation. This work had united Bharatam Janam, the way Prakrtam (spoken version of Samskrta Bharati) had united Bharatam Janam in a Bharatiya sprachbund (language union). DhAtupAtha was the earliest attempt to clearly identify sememes (root morphemes, the smallest linguistic units of meaning) from among multifarious forms of pronounced words in speech forms of Prakrtam. Similarly, Indus Script was the earliest attempt to signify sememes through orthographic signifiers as hieroglyph components in a writing system for parole, speech form of language. Thus, for example, a sememe, kuTi is signified by a water-carrier hieroglyph; a sememe baTa Bhartrhari (c. 5th century CE) Vakyapadiya in Bharatiya grammatical tradition explains the theories on the word and on the sentence and elaborates on sphota, ‘spurt, bursting, opening’ as a framework to explain how the mind orders linguistic units into meaningful utterances. Indus Script as a writing system is a method in semiotics, a study of meaning-making together with a study of orthography. It is reasonable to hypothesise that Samskrtam in Prakrtam speech forms was the lingua franca of the civilization ca. 2500 BCE on the banks of Vedic River Sarasvati which is consistent with the assumption that Prkritam form of vAk evolved in the region from ca. 8th millennium BCE given the archaeological discoveries of cultural pointers. One pointer is the use of s’ankha turbinella pyrum bangles from ca. 6500 BCe. Another is the practice of sindhur on mang (parting of the hair) of married women on two terracotta toys.
